Sciatica is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying problem. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, beginning at the base of the spine in the lower back, running through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. It controls muscles behind the knee and in the lower leg, and is responsible for some of the feeling in the legs and on the bottom of the foot. Pain, tingling and weakness may occur if there is pressure on this nerve or it becomes damaged. These sensations are, individually and collectively, referred to as sciatica. The pain can be mild or severe, depending on the cause and other factors.
There are a number of conditions that cause pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve including lumbar spinal stenosis, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, pelvic injury, tumors and piriformis syndrome, which affects a muscle in the buttocks. There are a variety of ways to treat painful sciatica, but it is important to uncover the cause of the pain in case it requires additional or more intensive care.
