What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care includes different techniques. At The Bax Doctor in Indianapolis, IN, we offer several methods to provide the best treatment for your situation.

Chiropractic care uses gentle pressure to correct misalignments. Spinal misalignments are the focus of chiropractic treatment. However, other joints are realigned with joint manipulation. Read below to understand the methods we use to help our patients.

Chiropractic Techniques

Which chiropractic technique is used depends on your condition and the chiropractor's resources and expertise. Chiropractic techniques include the Gonstead Technique and Sacral Occipital Technique.

Gonstead Technique

Most chiropractors consider the Gonstead technique the most effective chiropractic technique. It's the most common technique used today, with over 70% of chiropractors using it.

The chiropractor will use X-rays and visual observation. Next, they will check for misalignment with static and non-static pulses, allowing them to feel your spine. A stereoscope, which detects inflammation and nerve dysfunction, is also part of the process.

Once the misalignments are found, the chiropractor uses gentle thrusts to realign the vertebrae. The patient lies on their side during the adjustment.  The Gonstead technique can also be used to align other joints in the body.

Sacral Occipital Technique

The Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) views the pelvis as the foundation for the spine. Therefore, it focuses on the head, spine, and pelvis relationship. This technique examines the patient in prone, supine, and vertical positions.

The Sacral Occipital Technique is one of the gentlest forms of chiropractic treatment. The goal of the treatment is to stabilize cranial sacral respiratory responses. This stabilization allows your spine and brain to communicate with your nervous system effectively.

The patient will meticulously lie on specific blocks. This method allows their body weight to apply pressure in the needed areas. The chiropractor may use light pressure to adjust the spine or pelvis further.

The SOT takes a more holistic approach than most forms. In addition to misalignments, it looks for muscle strength, neurological responses, and sensitive tissue areas.
